As the tradition of holding this alternate St. Patrick’s day continues, the University of Illinois is taking matters into their own hands by asking the nearby town of Champaign to raise the entry age to bars on the day of the CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — You might not know it, but this weekend was Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day on the University of Illinois’ campus. That’s quite a switch from the peak days of the celebration that started in 1995. For years, “unofficial” was a large event on campus, with thousands of students drinking all day and all night long. Short for Unofficial St. Patrick's Day, it allows students to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Champaign-Urbana, even though the University is generally on spring break on March 17th. Celebrations generally involve copious drinking at bars or private residences and start early on the morning of the chosen day. A few decades ago, some students decided to start celebrating an "unoffical" St Patrick's day a few weeks early. Unofficial has since turned into the biggest drinking holiday in Champaign/Urbana. You can expect to see a bunch of people wearing green, people getting drunk during lectures, and tons of parties and bar crawls. The first event resembling Unofficial took place in March 1995, when Saint Patrick's Day at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was scheduled during spring break. [5] To avoid losing profits, ten bars in Champaign's Campustown, including several owned by Scott Cochrane, held a Saint Patrick's Day-themed event called "Shamrock Stagger" on March 8, 1995, two days before the university's Unofficial celebrations bring a bit of day drinking, time with friends and memories that will last a lifetime. For some, the celebration is just getting started, while others are already a few hours in. “Today, we went to a (day party) from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; it was like an apartment crawl,” said Alexis Bond, sophomore in LAS. Expect a sea of green this weekend as tens of thousands of students from the University of Illinois and elsewhere flock to Champaign-Urbana for Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day. Over the last several years, the event has been marred by underage drinking, destruction of property, and the distribution of drugs. In 2006, in response to the death of alum Caroline Yoon, the Office of the Chancellor created the Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day Task Force to develop recommendations to mitigate harm during the holiday. Additionally, in 2011, Champaign police issued 364 court notices to students after bolstering patrols during Unofficial weekend. Today, many student will begin celebrating Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and many Bradley students will join them. “A lot of people come up from Southern Illinois University, Illinois State, Bradley and a bunch of places,” freshman U of I student Jacob Stukenburg said.
